Power BI Resume Design Tutorial

When applying for a job, your resume is often the first thing potential employers see. Instead of sticking to traditional formats, why not use a Power BI resume to showcase your skills?

Recently, I tried designing my resume in Power BI. Not only does it allow for visual effects, but it also lets you demonstrate your Power BI capabilities right in the application process.

Previously, I would create my resume in PowerPoint, save it as a PDF, and send it to employers. This time, I saved my PowerPoint design as an SVG background and imported it into Power BI. From there, I added text and visualizations directly in Power BI. Alternatively, you can design all the text in the SVG and use Power BI solely for data visualizations.

Visualizations I've used in my Power BI resume

Here’s how I incorporated visuals into my Power BI resume:

  • Bar Chart: Displays my language proficiency with clear, easy-to-read visual representation.

  • Matrix with Conditional Formatting: Provides a timeline view of my past experiences, highlighting durations and key periods visually.

  • Radar Chart: Outlines my primary responsibilities in my current position. (Note: The radar chart isn’t a standard visual in Power BI; I used the one from ClearPeaks.)

Keeping your resume up-to-date is essential—it’s not just for job applications but also a great way to reflect on your growth and skills. If you’re starting your career or have limited work experience, creating a Power BI resume can help you showcase both your creativity and technical abilities.

    • Once you’ve made your changes, save the file as an SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics).
  2. Power BI File (PBIX)
  • Open the accompanying Power BI file.
  • Go to the Format Pane, click on Canvas Background, and load your customized SVG file as an image background.
  • From here, you can add your data visualizations, such as bar charts, matrices, or radar charts, to make your resume stand out.
