Power BI Resume Design Tutorial (Video & Download)

No template needed!

Creating a Power BI resume is a great way to showcase your skills and creativity. In my earlier approach (from 2022), I used an SVG template for the background, which was visually appealing. However, it really bothered me that I had to use a background image created outside of Power BI (in PowerPoint).

So that’s why I decided to challenge myself to create a redesigned resume using what’s available in Power BI!

Process of my Power BI Resume Rebuild - The Canvas Settings

  • Canvas setup: I started by setting a custom page size to match the A4 (1032px height, 723px width) format.

  • Canvas background: I chose the Color: #F3F3F3 and set the transparency to 0% (this is standard 100%).

  • Sections with Shapes: I use a dark rectangle shape (#242628) for the left side of the page and lighter shapes for the header and the background of the picture. I also use four line shapes for my key information and arrows as subheaders,
Bonus: at the end of the article, I explain how you can dynamically switch these colors and try several different options without configuring the colors repeatedly.

  • Text Boxes for Descriptions: I add text boxes for everything that is not available in a table (like certification and my current and past experience overview,

Power BI Resume Rebuild - The Data Visualization

Data Visualizations I’ve used:

    • A bar chart for my language skills. I had to use a little work around because I needed the conditional formatting option there to be able to dynamically switch colors, therefore I use 2 bar charts over each other (the first one showing 100% in every row, the second one showing the real percentages).

    • A Matrix visual for my past experience. I use conditional formatting of the background color and the font color to create the heatmap effect in Power BI.

    • Radar Chart: Outlines my primary responsibilities in my current position. (Note: The radar chart isn’t a standard visual in Power BI; I used the one from ClearPeaks.)
    • URL as an Image for the portfolio examples.

Bonus: Power BI Resume Color Change

This is a short explanation; I wrote a more extended summary about the method to change colors here.

  1. Add the colors to a table: Choose your colors using HEX codes or color names. Open Power BI Desktop, “click “Enter data,” and create a table with at least one column with the HEX code (see screenshot).
  2. Create a Tile Slicer: In the format pane, go to the Buttons setting, select the default states – Fill and locate the fx button to apply conditional formatting based on the Color field.
  3. Use conditional formatting for all shapes that should change color: Click on the shape and go to the format pane. Locate the fx button, choose Field Value, and select the color field.

Now, the slicer and shape fill will display the same colors when clicked, and you can use the slicer to change the colors in your Power BI resume.
